You need to upgrade your Flash Player The theme of this blog is not only and obviously space, but in particular “terrestrial worlds”, places that tend to have surfaces on which one could walk or at least attach oneself to. These places sometimes also have other earth-like familiar features such as atmospheres, weather, volcanos, geysers and perhaps, we are finding, even exotic oceans, rivers or lakes that are not necessarily made of familiar materials we are used to here at home. The second theme is imagery. Occasionally I do some retouching of images when needed if an image is incomplete or sometimes “dirty” or noisy. I will attempt to correct image shortcomings based upon other images or well-accepted presumed attributes. When this is done, notes will be offered as to what was added, why and sometimes how it was done. This way no one should ever wonder if something they are looking at is real or photoshop.

More STS-118

Yet another from 118.
Endeavor Against a Cloudy Earth

One of the best details of this one is that you can see an astronaut intentionally peeking out of the second window on the left. Seeing a person looking out the window reminds us how real it is. It’s like seeing a friend in a car go by… only our friend’s car is floating in the hostile vacuum of space.

I love the images, but I really don’t like logos, text, or other elements that are not part of the original image. Where do you get your source material so I can get the clean version?

    Thanks.

i know… i am always tempted to run the un-altered images as well, but then that is more posting and prepping and more files. i already am trying to make landscape wallpapers as well as more standard 1024×768 ones and now also the super-sized version. then there is the iPhone set. i have to draw a line somewhere.

i am a designer and half the fun for me is the formatting of all these into a cohesive collection. i also have to alter images a bit sometimes to remove noise, or just to fill the “canvas” and i kind of hate the idea of doing that and not making note of it on the piece for disclosure.

then there is credit for the freelancers who make many of these.

but i hear you… some people don’t care if its STS-119 and don’t need it labeled as TARGET: EARTH. but you know, many times that just happens in the black spaces. open up photoshop and have at it!

the sources are all over the place. maybe i should jsut provide links to where i find these things.

Actually, that picture (ISS015-E-21944) *was* taken during STS-118, almost certainly by the same photographer. Iit has an ISS designation because it was taken with an ISS camera, or downloaded from the ISS. It’s half of a panorama (see ISS015-E-21945). NASA says it was “taken by a crewmember during the mission’s first planned” EVA so it would have to be by either Rick Mastracchio or Dave Williams. My personal theory is that they knew I needed a knockout cover for my Space Shuttle 2008 wall calendar…

If I could Photoshop all of them them, I would. But, as in the image in the post before this one, you put the logo over the Earth, and that can’t be Photoshopped without leaving a scar.

If you could provide links to the main sources of the hi-res raw images, that would be great. Thanks!
